Heritage and Ethnic Societies
What is a heritage or lineage society? This is an organization that decides membership based on the actions of an applicant's ancestor, such as descendants of a particular person or group of people of historical importance. Some examples are Colonial Dames of America, First Families of VA, CT, OH, etc., The Mayflower Society, military order societies and Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). There are also various ethnic heritage societies. Societies and lineages societies can be found on the Internet.
Membership in these lineages or societies requires research to prove either a new ancestor or a relationship to one already established.
